While it is still impossible to stop the damage time does to our skin, we have learned to seriously reduce the impact of the different external factors of its premature aging.  In fact, we now have the power to considerably reduce fine lines and wrinkles, as well as sagging skin and loss of firmness by blocking or reducing their different harmful effects. And among the factors that can harm our skin and whose effects can be neutralized, pollution ranks in the lead.

1/ Pollution accelerates skin aging

Pollution is the deterioration of the environment by the introduction of substances into the air, water or ground that are naturally missing from it. The main pollutants are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrate oxides (NOx) and sulfur (SO²) or ozone (O3), and these are often invisible gases. More or less fine particles of mineral, metallic or organic origin combine with them. They are what give smog its color and consistency. These pollutant particles penetrate the upper skin cells (corneous layer) where they react by forming molecules called free radicals that can alter its properties and structure.

Although the pollution that assaults us is invisible, its effects on our skin are clearly the opposite… Recent studies have shown that living in polluted urban areas increases pigmentation spots on the forehead and cheeks by 20% compared to someone living in a non-polluted area. Pollution is also responsible for the accentuation of wrinkles on the facial areas around the nose and mouth.

2/ Protect yourself from oxidation

Used regularly, antioxidants have the valuable property of inhibiting cell damage caused by free radicals. This means they are precious anti-aging ingredients able to neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals on the skin – whether they be from pollution or not.

These antioxidants can be systemically administered through a balanced diet particularly rich in fruits and vegetables, or topically, by applying skin care cosmetics directly on the skin.

3/ Are some antioxidants better than others at protecting the skin from pollution?

Vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, carotenoids, trace elements…

Which antioxidant to choose to protect your skin from free radicals, regardless of their source? There are currently not enough comparative studies to enable us to definitively answer this question. Although there are many powerful, stable antioxidants able to slow the effects of pollution on our skin, no single agent, regardless of how effective, is able to deliver a full response on its own. However, certain agents are able to stimulate the free radical defenses naturally present in the skin and protect it from chemical assaults. (Synbioderm Moisturizing Cream and Moisturizing Gel-Cream).

4/ Sunscreen is necessary but it’s not enough

Good sun protection is a daily requirement, but it is not enough to fight the effects of pollution. Even if it is efficiently protected from the sun, you skin continues to need antioxidants.

5/ Does the skin have its own defense mechanisms against pollution?

As long as its barriers are in good working condition, healthy skin has the ability to protect itself against pollution. However, constant exposure to pollutants and UV rays ultimately weakens its natural defenses. Since the skin’s sensitivity to free radicals increases, it needs daily doses of antioxidants to maintain its vibrancy. And it’s never too late to start.

6/ Do I need protection day and night?

Although pollution is less severe at night than during the day, cell damage caused by free radicals never sleeps. Once it has begun, it continues day and night. That is why it is important to protect your skin while you sleep, while it is repairing itself.

7/ And what if I live in the country where there is less pollution?

Although rural areas shelter us from the dangers of pollution, they do not totally protect us from assaults from the environment. The oxygen in the air and exposure to the sun also trigger the appearance of free radicals. Over time, these cause the destruction of collagen, the appearance of abnormal cells, and progressively alter your skin’s reactivity.

Since, day after day, Synbionyme products enriched in antioxidant vitamin E replenish your skin with the right amount of anti-free radical substances, they help you reinforce your skin barriers and keep them working properly. By working like a genuine “second skin”, their moisturizers also provide specific anti-pollution protection to help your skin stay beautiful as long as possible.
